How do I schedule an appointment?
When your physician gives you a referral for therapy, simply call a ReVital Cancer Rehabilitation clinic location for an appointment. Our staff will collect all the necessary information needed to assist you with an appointment.
Can I go directly to cancer rehabilitation without a doctor's prescription?
All 50 states have some form of direct access to therapy services but the law varies by state regarding certain restrictions. This means that you may be able to go to therapy without a doctor’s prescription in some but not all states. The needs of cancer survivors, however, are often complex. We will work with your doctor to ensure our team understands your medical and oncologic history.
What will happen during my first ReVital cancer rehabilitation visit?
To help your first visit go smoothly:
- Arrive at your appointment with your paperwork completed as accurately as possible.
- You will need to provide your prescription for therapy.
- We will copy your insurance card.
- You will be seen for the initial evaluation by your therapist.
- Bring a form of identification such as your driver's license.
Your therapist will discuss the following:
- Your complete medical and oncologic history.
- Your current problems and complaints.
- Your pain intensity and what aggravates and eases the problem.
- How your issue is impacting your daily activities or your functional limitations.
- Any medications, tests, and procedures related to your health.
- Your goals for therapy.
Your therapist will perform a comprehensive and objective evaluation which may include one or more of the following:
- Palpation – the therapist will touch around the area of the pain or problem to check for tenderness, swelling, soft tissue integrity, tissue temperature, inflammation, and other issues.
- Range of Motion (ROM) - the therapist will move the joint(s) to assess the quality of movement and see if there are any restrictions.
- Muscle Testing - the therapist will check muscle strength and evaluate the quality of the muscle contraction. Pain and weakness will be noted if present.
- Neurological Screening - the therapist will check nerve function by evaluating your strength and ability to feel sensations such as touch, pain, vibration, or temperature. Reflexes may be assessed as well.
- Special Tests - the therapist may perform special tests when needed to confirm or exclude the presence of additional problems.
- Posture Assessment - the positions of joints relative to what is considered ideal and each other may be assessed.
- Functional Assessment - the therapist may watch how you perform normal activities such as how you walk, and may measure how much time it takes you to perform certain movements. These assessments allow your therapist to determine your current strengths and limitations. Based on the outcome of the functional assessment, your therapist will prescribe activities specifically designed to maximize your benefits from therapy. He or she will also look for any assistive device needs you may have to make sure you are able to complete your daily activities safely.
- Problem List - the therapist will formulate a list of problems you are having, and a plan to treat those problems. A plan is developed with input from you and your doctor. This includes how many times you should see the therapist per week, how many weeks you will need therapy, home programs, patient education, short-term/long-term goals, and what is expected after discharge from therapy.
What do I need to bring with me?
Make sure you bring your therapy referral (provided to you by your doctor), your payment information, and a form of identification such as your driver’s license. If your insurance is covering the cost of therapy, bring your insurance card as well.
How can I request patient medical records?
To request patient records, please contact your ReVital Cancer Rehab clinic, where clinical support staff will be able to assist you.
What should I wear to my cancer rehabilitation visit?
You should wear loose fitting clothing so you can easily expose the area that we will be evaluating and treating. For example, if you have a knee problem, it is best to wear shorts or sweat pants. For a shoulder problem, a tank top is ideal. For low back problems, wearing a loose fitting shirt and pants will help us with our evaluation and treatment.
How long will each treatment last?
Treatment sessions typically last 30 to 60 minutes per visit.
How many visits will I need and how often will I need them?
The number of visits and how frequently they occur varies greatly from patient to patient. You may need one visit or you may need several weeks of care. It depends on your diagnosis, the severity of your impairments, your past medical history, and other factors. Frequency and length of treatment will be discussed at your initial evaluation. You will be re-evaluated on a monthly basis and we will provide your doctor with a detailed report of our progress and recommendations.
Are you in my network?
The ReVital Cancer Rehabilitation clinics included in each insurance network varies by city, state and specific policy type. For more information, please contact a clinic in your area to verify coverage.
What should I do if I have to cancel?

When should I arrive?
Please arrive at least 15 minutes before your first appointment in order to complete all necessary paperwork.
Can I go to any cancer rehabilitation facility?
In most cases, you have the right to choose any therapy clinic. ReVital Cancer Rehabilitation is accepted by many different insurance plans. We have a growing network of therapy clinics but not all may have the specialized services you require. For instance lymphedema therapy, speech language pathology, and cognitive rehabilitation services are only available at certain locations. We will work with you to identify the clinic that is best for your individual needs.
How much will this cost?
Most insurance policies cover therapy services. Out-of-pocket costs vary by insurance provider and policy type. Prior to your first visit, our clinical support staff will contact your insurance company to verify your benefits. This will be discussed with you when you arrive for your first visit.
How does the billing process work?
Billing processes for therapy are similar to those of your doctor’s office but can vary by location. For more information regarding billing processes, please contact your local ReVital cancer rehabilitation clinic.
Who should I contact with billing questions?
If you have questions about your bill please contact the clinic where you received therapy and ask to speak with the clinic manager. They can assist in addressing your concern directly, or involve additional staff to resolve issues if needed.
I don't have insurance. Can you work out a financial agreement with me?
Our policy varies by clinic. We recommend you contact the facility that you are planning to attend to find out what options are available.
After your first visit
How is my progress measured?
ReVital therapists are focused on helping cancer survivors improve their function and quality of life. Progress needs to be assessed regularly to ensure proper treatment interventions are being utilized to help facilitate improvement. Objective measurements such as range of motion, mobility and pain may be assessed frequently. A full re-evaluation is performed at least every 30 days but may occur more frequently if required by your insurance company or physician follow up schedule. At that time, all objective measurements that were taken on the first visit will be reassessed. Updated results will be used to assess progress toward your initial goals and set new goals set accordingly. Re-evaluations also allow your therapist to determine if therapy is still required and at what frequency. A summary of your progress is sent to your referring physician, as your therapy plan must be approved by your physician.
What will I have to do after therapy?
The problems experienced by cancer survivors vary widely. Some issues are chronic and so the patient will need to continue with home exercises indefinitely. This is often the case with lymphedema and radiation fibrosis syndrome. Incorporating gym-based exercises, yoga, Pilates, and other activities is also very useful to help patients maintain their function and quality of life. Many patients will complete their rehabilitation and return to normal daily activities. It is important that you communicate your goals to your therapist, so he/she can develop a custom program for you.
What happens if my problem or pain returns?
Flare ups are not uncommon, particularly in cancer survivors. Many disorders such as those caused by radiation may progress over time even if they responded initially to therapy. If you have a flare up (exacerbation), give us a call. We may suggest you come back to see us, return to your doctor, or simply modify your daily activities or exercise routine.
When it comes to therapy, what is my responsibility?
Each patient is ultimately responsible for their success in their rehabilitation program. Your cancer rehabilitation therapist cannot do it without you! We can provide you with the tools to recover but we ask that all patients and clients cooperate by following through with their home exercise programs and instructions. Your recovery is greatly dependent upon your compliance with your Cancer Rehabilitation program. Please help us to help YOU.
